Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has already delivered a withering verdict on David De Gea as speculation continues over the goalkeeper’s future at Old Trafford.

De Gea’s name appeared alongside the likes of Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe on the Premier League website on a list of players released by United after the end of their current deals. If no agreement over a new contract is found over the coming ten days, the Spain international will become a free agent on the first day of July and will be able to negotiate a potentially lucrative deal elsewhere.

De Gea has endured a mixed 12-year spell in Manchester, helping United become Premier League champions and claim two League Cups, an FA Cup and the Europa League during that time. However, he has also attracted criticism in recent years after making a number of errors.

Assessing the keeper’s form after the FA Cup Final defeat against Manchester City, Ten Hag praised De Gea for ‘a great season’ - but the United manager also admitted the stopper had areas of his game that must improve if he does extend his stay at Old Trafford.

He said: “In this moment, I don’t want to talk about such issues of criticism because we played all a great season - including David De Gea, he played a fantastic season. Say it like this, we are in the right direction. But there are occasions in the game, issues in the game we have to improve, definitely, if we want to make the next step and win trophies. I have only one plan, that is to improve this club and to improve this team.

“I have my ideas and I already told the club what we have to do for that but I have to work with my staff, with my players to be better next season. It’s not about getting players in and they do well. It’s about we work all season and day by day to develop the team, progress the team. I’m very proud where we came from in the start of the season.”

Former United club captain Keane has already made clear his feelings over De Gea’s future as his stressed his old club need to find a world class goalkeeper if they are to build on the progress made during Ten Hag’s first season in charge.

He told ITV Football: “They need a world-class striker and a goalkeeper, and other players for strength in depth too. I am sick of saying it. A top goalkeeper saves that. They get you over the line in big games and that could have been the difference today. They need a world-class goalkeeper and he isn’t. We will keep talking about it. Some of these players aren’t good enough for United. They have to spend the money to get the players United deserve.”
