Manchester United are in the hunt for signings as they prepare for the new Premier League season

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov believes Mason Mount would be a decent signing for Erik ten Hag’s side. The Red Devils are being heavily linked with a swoop for the England international this summer.

The 24-year-old’s future at Stamford Bridge is up in the air at the moment and his contract expires in June 2024. He has been on the books of the Blues for his whole career to date but may well cut ties with the London outfit in the near future.

United could see him as someone to add more competition and depth to their ranks ahead of next term. They are back in the Champions League after finishing 3rd in the Premier League table in the last campaign and could do with some more players to help prepare for the increased number of fixtures coming their way.

Berbatov has delivered his verdict on Mount’s situation, as per Betfred: “I was surprised at Mason’s lack of game time at Chelsea last season. I’m not certain of the reasons behind this, but now we have to see if Mauricio Pochettino can convince Mason to stay at Stamford Bridge and whether he will be desperate to keep him at Chelsea.

“Mauricio will want to speak to all the players in the squad and see where they are mentally and whether they want to commit to doing their best for Chelsea next season. Decisions will be made once these conversations are held.

He added: “Ultimately, I believe Pochettino would like to keep Mason at Chelsea because he’s a good player. If not, then if Mason decides to join Manchester United, then I believe he would be a good option in their squad.

“People will say that Manchester United already have Bruno Fernandes in Mason’s position, but the season is a marathon and Manchester United will be competing in the Premier League, the Champions League and the other cup competitions, so you need a lot of quality in your squad if you’re going to compete on all fronts.”

United-linked Mount made 35 appearances this past season for Chelsea and has chipped in with three goals. He has risen up through the academy ranks of the Blues and had loan spells away at Vitesse and Derby County to gain experience.

The Portsmouth-born man has played 195 games for them in all competitions to date and has scored 33 times. However, it remains to be seen whether he will be sticking around under Mauricio Pochettino.
