It has not been a stand-out season for Manchester United captain Harry Maguire.

The defender’s form has come up for criticism from fans and pundits alike - with ex-United star Rio Ferdinand recently pointing the finger at his lack of pace among the things plaguing his performance on the pitch.

There have also been transfer rumours speculating Maguire could be linked with a move away from Old Trafford.

Why was Harry Maguire booed?

Maguire was even booed by some in the crowd before England’s friendly win over Ivory Coast on Tuesday night - which England manager Gareth Southgate slammed as an ‘absolute joke’.

Some fans jeered when his name was read out on the team-sheet, and then again at his first touch of the ball - presumably in reaction to his recent poor form for United.

However, he has been a regular part of the England team which has qualified for the World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

Asked why Maguire was booed, Southgate replied: “I imagine if you asked a few of them why they did it they probably wouldn’t even be able to answer. It’s mob mentality.

“One end of the ground you have a hardcore group trying to get his name sung - it wasn’t everybody.”

So does Maguire still deserve the captain’s armband at Old Trafford? We asked United fans for their views on the skipper in our Busby Way video podcast.
