Man Utd and Manchester City could both buy new players during the January transfer window.

We are already one week into the January transfer window and there has yet to be a major move from either Manchester club.

Manchester United have already warned there is effectively no budget to work with and Ruben Amorim will need to sell players before he can invest in his own squad this month. Man City are open to doing business this month but are well aware of the difficulties of signing top targets midway through a campaign.

United and City both know a successful January transfer window could be a deciding factor in the success of their season and time is already running out if they are to complete any deals this month.

When is January deadline day?

It might be known as the January transfer window, but this year the deadline day actually falls on Monday 3 February 2025, with the window due to shut at 11pm GMT.

When does the January transfer window close across Europe?

The January transfer window for most major European clubs is also Monday 3 February 2025, though the times vary. For example, French clubs only have until 1pm GMT to complete any deals.

The two biggest exceptions are that Italian clubs only have until 7pm on Saturday 1 February 2025 to do their business, which could complicate any sale to Serie A. The Turkish window is open until Tuesday 11 February 2025, while the Saudi Arabia window shuts on Thursday 30 January 2025.

Manchester United and Man City loan transfer rules

Manchester clubs could look to bolster their squads with loan signings this month, but there are several rules they must abide by in that case.

The Premier League Handbook states Premier League clubs may not register more than two players on loan at any one time, which means both Manchester United and Man City can sign two players on loan if they wish. The only other rules to abide by are that the maximum number of loans a club can register in the same season is four, and a club can't loan more than one player from the same club at any one time.
