Manchester United fans were left thinking back to what could have been, as well as a piece of ruthless Gary Neville points finger of blame after Man Utd loss to West Ham">Gary Neville punditry, as former midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan starred for Inter Milan against AC Milan in the Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night.

The 34-year-old scored the second of his side's two goals as they achieved a huge win at the San Siro and put one leg in this year's Champions League final against either Manchester City or Real Madrid.

Mkhitaryan spent a season and a half at Old Trafford before moving to Arsenal and, although it wasn't long, there were highlights to his time in the North West.

The midfielder enjoyed purple patches of assists, scored a famous scorpion kick against Sunderland which he labelled his best-ever goal and netted in the 2017 Europa League final against Ajax to help bring silverware to Manchester as the first Armenian to win a major European trophy.

Come January 2018 and the star had left for Arsenal in a swap deal for Alexis Sanchez. He would then enjoy a stint at Roma before signing for Inter Milan last summer on a free transfer.

Seeing Mkhitaryan star in the Champions League had his name trending on Twitter once again last night as Manchester United fans lamented letting him go, and recalled when Gary Neville audaciously decided the midfielder's time at United was a flop.

The former full-back ranked all of his ex-club's transfers since 2013 into a green 'good' list, amber 'maybe' list and red 'flop' list, with Mkhitaryan in the latter.

At the time, one United fan wrote: "Even Mkhitaryan helped us win Europa. And Gary put him in a RED category. Very toxic."

Another said: "How the f*** has Mkhitaryan failed at Manchester United??? Carried us to the UEL final and won it for us. Silliest decision to rid of him for Alexis Sanchez who didn't put a foot right for the club."

Football fans were feeling that way again last night as Mkhitaryan celebrated his goal in the first half.

One Twitter user said: "It's gonna be poetic when Darmian, Lukaku and Mkhitaryan, deemed not good enough for Man Utd, to reach the Champions League final before United can even qualify for next season proper."

Another added: "Matteo Darmian, Romelu Lukaku & Henrikh Mkhitaryan all ridiculed and laughed out of Manchester United, 90 minutes away from a Champions League final, while Man Utd desperately try and hang on to qualifying. Football is a funny game isn’t it?"
