Manchester United fans have been reacting to Donny van de Beek’s impressive performance.
Van de Beek has been inconsistent and below par more often than not, but there is fresh hope for the 25-year-old, given the appointment of Dutch boss Erik ten Hag, who previously coached the midfielder at Ajax.
Amid a shortage of midfielders heading into the new season, particularly defensive midfielders, van de Beek is set to get another chance.
And he put on a bright performance during United’s friendly clash with Rayo Vallecano over the weekend, though not everyone was convinced.
A video later emerged of all the midfielder’s best passages of play, and United fans have been reacting to that video on Reddit.
Here we round up the best of the responses on the thread.
Shiiqalka - “His one touch football will be very crucial to beat the press.”
Astroworlddd - “Yeah I have no idea why he was getting slated. Thought he had a good game. Few misplaced/hit passes but it’s pre-season. It looked like he actually had a purpose on the pitch yesterday.”
Crossxfir3 - “I rate Donny, and he’s not been awful but he’s not been as good as I’ve seen from him in red during preseason imo. He wasn’t as tidy and his movement seems off imo.
“But I agree a bunch of people just seem oblivious to how great he is at finding space for the pass and how good he is at getting a hold of stray balls for us.”
MarcusZXR - “If players aren’t pinging 50 yard passes or the one to provide a goal scoring assist they often get overlooked by fans on the internet because its younger users who like flamboyant and exciting footballers. Football is a famously simple game and I love watching him play.
“I just want to say this isn’t a dig. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be entertained and enjoying that side of the game.”
IlyaKarnain - “I think he finally has a buddy in Eriksen who understands what he tries to do.”
Booknard2987 - “Donny didn’t do anything to really stand out, but his understanding with Eriksen and Ronaldo looked surprisingly good.”
ZMastaa - “I watched this game at the stadium. Honestly VDB seems so much more “useful” in real life compared to on screen, it’s hard to explain.”
