Matheus Cunha could solve two Manchester United transfer issues with star handed new role if he signs

If Manchester United have it their way, Matheus Cunha will move to Old Trafford in the summer. Ruben Amorim wants to add both a striker and an attacking midfielder to his squad, with Wolves star Cunha viewed as an attainable target for the midfield role.
The 25-year-old has a £62.5 million release clause in his current deal, which makes a possible transfer rather straightforward in that sense. United know exactly how much it will cost to sign him, and although Wolves would like the majority of the fee to be paid upfront, there is optimism they would accept the fee in instalments.

Hide AdAmorim wants to add more goals to his squad and Cunha has scored 32 times in 87 appearances for Wolves, with sixteen of them this season. It is obvious to see why United are interested in the Brazilian, though he will only be as effective for them if they manage to use him in a position that gives him the freedom to attack.
Amad Diallo could be set for position change
Even though Ruben Amorim wants Manchester United to sign a new attacking midfielder this summer, it is actually a position in which they are pretty well supplied. Bruno Fernandes, Alejandro Garnacho, Amad Diallo, Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee are already options there, so one of them might need to be moved on if they are to add him to the squad.
The initial temptation is to say Cunha could partner Garnacho or Amad behind Rasmus Hojlund or Liam Delap in attack, though it might not be a tactic that works in every match. United would be a huge threat on the counter-attack, but might struggle to break down an opponent without the artistry of someone like Fernandes in the forward line.
If that is the case, then it would be Cunha and Fernandes playing behind a striker, with Garnacho reduced to a possible bench role and Amad repurposed as a right wing-back in the line up. United would also like to add a wing-back to their side this summer, but after missing out on a move for Chelsea-bound Geovany Quenda, they might be better off using Amad in the role instead.

Hide AdThe Ivorian was United's best player before his injury setback and started in the wing-back role under Amorim in his first match in charge. He was soon repurposed to the attacking midfield role, but in five appearances as a right wing-back this season, he has still contributed three goals and four assists.
If United solve their scoring issues this summer through the addition of Cunha and a striker, then they will be less reliant on Amad as a scorer and could move him out right to solve another issue in their squad, while he will still be available as attacking back-up if required.
Cunha might not only solve one transfer problem, but he could push United towards solving two.
