Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United have 'good feelings' over second summer signing

Man Utd are plotting a busy summer transfer window and could get their business wrapped up early.

Manchester United are pushing forward with their summer transfer plans, despite not knowing whether they will be in the Champions League or not next season. United initially budgeted for next season with the expectation they would not be playing European football, but they could still qualify for the top continental competition.

United produced an epic comeback last week to defeat Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final, with a two-legged tie against Athletic Club in the last four their reward. If they progress to the final and then win that, United will not only secure a piece of silverware, they will also qualify for the Champions League.

It would not only make United a more attractive prospect for any summer signings, but it will also hand them a huge financial boost as they look to rebuild their squad while they comply with Profit and Sustainability rules. United have already agreed the signing of teenage defender Diego Leon from Paraguayan club Cerro Porteño and they could be close to a second signing already.

United have 'good feelings' over Cunha deal

Manchester United have prioritised the addition of a striker in the summer transfer window, but head coach Ruben Amorim also wants to add an attacking midfielder to his playing squad. United have identified Wolves star Matheus Cunha as their preferred option for the role, and they could be close to an agreement already.

Cunha insisted on a £62.5 million release clause when he signed a new Wolves contract in January, and in that sense would be a rather straightforward deal to complete. Wolves would want the bulk of the fee paid upfront, though there is a belief United would be able to do so if they manage to shift some players this summer.

Taking to social media on Monday, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano issued an update on the Wolves star and claimed United were in a good place to sign him this summer.

"Manchester United are leading the race to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves as negotiations are ongoing," he said. "Personal terms are being discussed, as Man Utd are aware of more clubs keen + £62.5m release clause available. Good feelings after initial contacts between Cunha and #MUFC."

The 25-year-old has 16 goals and four assists for Wolves this season and is a key reason why they will remain in the English top-flight. They secured their Premier League survival with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday and prior to the match Ruben Amorim was quizzed on their interest in the player.

"I think he's (Vitor Pereira) doing an amazing job. He's playing a 343, he's doing quite well. He's changing some players, he has real quality players - Cunha and all these guys, they have real quality." He added: "I just gave the example because I remembered about Matheus - he's scoring a lot of goals. Just that."
