The Red Devils take on Barnsley at home in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. In the meantime, here is a look at some of the latest news and rumours coming out of the club...

Striker eyed

United are showing ‘strong interest’ in Borussia Dortmund attacker Karim Adeyemi ahead of January along with league rivals Newcastle United and Liverpool, according to a report by Spanish news outlet Fichajes. The 22-year-old is being linked with a switch to Old Trafford in the upcoming January transfer window.

Erik ten Hag currently has Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund as his two senior striking options. The latter has been out injured so far in this campaign and the club will get the chance to bring in more competition in that department this winter if they want to.

Adeyemi, who is a Germany international with four caps under his belt, joined Dortmund in 2022 and has since scored 16 goals in 70 games in all competitions for the Bundesliga giants. Prior to his move to his current club, he spent four years at Red Bull Salzburg and found the net on 33 occasions in 94 outings for the Austrian outfit.

United could see him as someone to sharpen their strike force as they look to win some silverware in this campaign. It remains to be seen at this stage whether they plan to make an official offer for him.

Midfielder defended by pundit

Sky Sports pundits Paul Merson and Clinton Morrison have jumped to the defence of Casemiro amid recent criticism towards the United man. He made a couple of mistakes against Liverpool in their last home game.

Merson has said: “I think it’s been over the top. I felt for Casemiro, I really did (against Liverpool). I know he gave the ball away but everyone gives the ball away. There was a lot to be done still (by Liverpool), a lot to be done.”

Morrison added: “It’s different than Real Madrid, (look at) the players he had around him. It’s a different league than the Premier League. The Premier League is a fast tempo. He had some top players (around him). He is a top player, Merse is spot on.

“He is still trying to be positive and make forward balls. He’s just a yard too slow at the moment but you can never write a player off. He’s 32 years of age, he’s not 35, 36. He was never a quick midfielder anyway. He just used to screen it and give it to players like Luke Modric. He had players in front of him who could create something at Real Madrid.”

Merson added: “His confidence has gone. He’s not become a bad player, his confidence has just gone.”
