'Extremely difficult' - Manchester United sent transfer warning that could impact Geovany Quenda summer move

Man Utd are looking to strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window.

Manchester United will look to reinforce their squad with some talented young talent this summer, but it might not be the wisest transfer strategy.

There is set to be a mass overhaul at Old Trafford come the end of the season, with several experienced stars expected to leave the club. Marcus Rashford and Casemiro could both be sold, while Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof are all set to become free agents when their respective contracts expire. Add into the mix the prospective sales of Jadon Sancho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw and it could be an extensive squad rebuild.

United will prioritise the addition of a striker, while there is also hope to add a winger and a central midfielder at the very least. Liam Delap, 22, and Geovany Quenda, 17, are both being linked with moves to Old Trafford, though despite their obvious talent, it could represent a huge risk.

United warned over signing youngsters

In an extensive interview with The Athletic, former United defender Raphael Varane warned about the lack of structure during his time at Old Trafford and added that a key issue is how quickly they integrate young players, without giving them enough time to settle.

“At Madrid, you can see that for years there has been a framework," he said. "A player is added, some leave, but there is always a solid foundation. When you recruit young, talented players, they have to learn before they can play. It gives them time to develop. When I arrived, at the age of 18, I had no responsibilities in the dressing room. I was just there to learn. At United, they can recruit a very expensive young player and immediately play him, with all the responsibilities in an extremely difficult league. He’s got a huge weight on his shoulders straight away.”

United have signed some players with huge potential in recent years, but yet again it is only potential. A player still has to go on to fulfil that talent by playing in a productive environment and perhaps a key reason why the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Jadon Sancho have struggled is largely down to the lack of framework, an issue that Leny Yoro could also face in the years ahead.

It is also an issue Ruben Amorim is aware of himself. He faced some criticism last weekend for only handing out one debut in the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, but warned that he was 'trying to be careful' with the youngsters and didn't just want to throw them into the toughest league undercooked because it might actually harm their development.

United deserve some credit for targeting players with long-term potential, but in a summer when they will lose so much experience it is important they manage to replace it with established stars who can deliver immediately and ease the burden on those who might not be quite ready yet.
