Mark Robins highlighted the importance of Scott McTominay after Manchester United's dramatic penalty shootout victory over Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final.

United had to rely on the heroics of Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund to set-up a final with Man City after they had inexplicably thrown away a three-goal lead in the final twenty minutes of normal time.

Ellis Simms looked to have netted merely a consolation goal when he fired in at the near post, only for Callum O'Hare and Haji Wright to complete a remarkable comeback in the dying moments of normal time. Coventry thought they had won the contest when Victor Torp netted a last minute goal in extra-time, only for it to be disallowed after a VAR check found Wright to have been offside in the build-up.

United regrouped to defeat Coventry on penalties and after the match, Robins pinpointed five United players for the threat they posed in the game.

"If it's right, it's the right call," he said of the disallowed goal. "I go back to the start of the game, United they've got some blistering on the counter-attack, so you have to be careful how soon you open up. If you open up too soon, they can destroy your confidence. So we had to be careful: trying to block spaces, and making them work really hard to create anything. You know you have to stay in the game and then you can make changes afterwards.

"First goal, they started to move it. (Scott) McTominay starting, obviously he had not trained all week apparently. He gives them something different, because he runs throughout the game. Bruno Fernandes tries to control the game, (Kobbie) Mainoo is a new kid who looks like a real talent. You've got (Rasmus) Hojlund up front who is a physical specimen, but runs and presses. (Marcus) Rashford on the left, who has got blistering pace, so if you give him space you have to be in a position to block that off."
