Erik ten Hag insists he is not 'embarassed' by Manchester United's win over Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final and believes the focus should be on the 'huge achievement' of reaching successive finals.

United were in cruise control after taking a 3-0 lead in the second-half before they inexplicably threw away the three-goal advantage and had to rely on a penalty shootout to defeat their Championship opposition.

Coventry looked to have won the game when Victor Torp scored deep into stoppage time of extra-time, only for the goal to be ruled out after a VAR check for offside against Haji Wright.

United just about held on to take the game to penalties, where they triumphed 4-2, but after the game Ten Hag refused to label the performance an 'embarrassment'.

“No, I can’t see that,” he told reporters when asked if he understood why fans would be embarassed by the performance. “At the end of the day it’s about achievement.

“I see the mistakes we make, but it’s not an embarasmsent, it’s a huge achievement. Given a big team from United a decade ago they achieve final three times, now it’s two times in two years, that with all the setbacks, even today, at 3-3 it’s crazy that decision.

“Then we should get pen to make it 4-3, that was more a handball than the penalty we conceded. That happens many times. Chelsea two crazy pens, Liverpool penalty very debatable. It’s like a curse again it. We’ll take energy from this, we have to build the confidence.”
