The Red Devils face Brighton & Hove Albion at Wembley and will hope to bounce back from their chastening 3-0 defeat by Sevilla on Thursday that saw them eliminated from the Europa League. Anthony Martial seemed to pick up a knock in the second half and had to be replaced, and it remains unclear if he’ll be fit to face the Seagulls.

“It is so short after the [final] whistle in Seville so I can’t give a comment on it,” Ten Hag said in Friday’s pre-match press conference, less than 24 hours after the Sevilla loss. “We didn’t train [yet], after training I will know more.”

Ten Hag will, however, be able to call upon the services of Bruno Fernandes once again after he missed Thursday’s Europa League defeat through suspension. On the other hand, Harry Maguire has been ruled out with a one-match ban after picking up two bookings in the earlier rounds of the competition.

It leaves United light on defensive numbers with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez injured, meaning Luke Shaw may have to play at centre-back. Alejandro Garnacho returned to training this week but is not yet ready to come back into the squad. Scott McTominay is also out with a knock while Tom Heaton and Donny van de Beek remain on the sidelines.

As for Brighton, they also have a plethora of problems to deal with and Tariq Lamptey, Adam Lallana, Jakub Moder and Jeremy Sarmiento are unavailable through injury. However, Roberto De Zerbi revealed in his pre-match press conference that Luke Steele, Joel Veltman and Evan Ferguson could recover from knocks in time to be involved at Wembley.

“The situation on injuries is not clear,” said the Italian. “We will see tomorrow morning. We have another two days. We have time to understand the situation and analyse the decision.”

Doubts: Martial (United), Steele, Veltman, Ferguson (Brighton)

Ruled out: Heaton, Maguire, Varane, Martinez, McTominay, Van de Beek, Garnacho (United), Lamptey, Lallana, Moder, Sarmiento (Brighton)
