Manchester United could be without Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial for Tuesday’s must-win Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.

The pair both missed the Red Devils' opening training session on Monday due to illness and it's not clear whether either will be available to face the encounter against Thomas Tuchel's side.

Rashford missed their last outing in Europe, the 3-3 draw at Galatasaray, following his red card in the loss to Copenhagen in the fourth match of the group. The England international was handed a retrospective one-game ban for his challenge on Elias Jelert and is therefore available to face Bayern.

But with Erik ten Hag expected to pick his strongest XI at Old Trafford on Tuesday, it’s unlikely Rashford or Martial will be involved from the off. United need to win against Bayern and hope Copenhagen v Galatasaray ends in a draw, and any other set of results will see the Red Devils eliminated from the competition.

United only have one other major doubt for the game, with Victor Lindelof’s fitness uncertain. The Swede came off at half-time in last Wednesday’s win over Chelsea and was forced to sit out the hapless display against Bournemouth at the weekend. Ten Hag said in his press conference that there were 'question marks' surrounding Lindelof's availability, but he was involved in training on Monday.

Christian Eriksen and Mason Mount are expected back at some stage this month, but neither are likely to be involved against Bayern. Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro are long-term absences, although the latter is back training on the grass once again. Jadon Sancho remains unavailable due to his ongoing feud with Ten Hag.

As for Bayern, they’re set to be without Serge Gnabry for the trip to Manchester. In a statement released over the weekend, the German champions said: “Serge Gnabry suffered a groin strain in Saturday's 5-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt, a scan revealed last night. Gnabry, who was forced off the field just five minutes after coming on in Frankfurt, will therefore miss Bayern's upcoming matches.”

He joins Bouna Sarr on the sidelines with the defender undergoing surgery on a torn anterior cruciate ligament earlier this month. Matthijs de Ligt has also not been named in the travelling squad due to a knee injury that has prevented him playing in the last six weeks.

However, there was better news concerning Jamal Musiala, who made his return on Saturday following a hamstring injury that kept him out for a month.

Doubts: Lindelof, Rashford, Martial (United). Out: Martinez, Malacia, Casemiro, Eriksen, Mount, Sancho (United); De Ligt, Sarr, Gnabry (Bayern).
