Man Utd player ratings v Galatasaray - One scores 8/10 but another earns 4/10 - gallery

Manchester United's hopes of progressing to the next stage of the Champions League are dangling by a thread after a 3-3 draw.

Manchester United twice allowed a two-goal lead to slip for the second Champions League game in a row, as the Red Devils drew 3-3 against Galatasaray on Wednesday night.

It's a result that means United will be out of the competition if Copenhagen beat Bayern Munich in the later kick-off, and even if the German champions win, Erik ten Hag's side will need to beat Bayern in two weeks if they're to qualify.

But it could have been so different, had United held their nerve when leading 3-1 in the second half, thanks to goals from Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay. The Red Devils faced a daunting atmosphere in the Turkish capital, with home fans displaying a familiar message of ‘welcome to hell’ prior to kick-off, with every touch from the visiting players booed by the raucous Galatasaray supporters.

But United responded excellently to that intimidation, with Rasmus Hojlund going closer after just five minutes, but failing to connect properly with Garnacho’s cross into a dangerous area, before the latter grabbed the game’s first goal soon after.

Hojlund and Fernandes created the chance as they linked well at the edge of the box, with the United skipper releasing Garnacho at the back post and, three days on from his wonder goal at Goodison Park, the winger took a touch and fired the ball past Fernando Muslera at the goalkeeper’s near post.

And after 18 minutes it was 2-0, as Fernandes picked up the ball from around 35 yards out, drove forward and unleashed a powerful shot from distance that flew into the opposition net.

United almost perfectly implemented their game plan in the opening quarter of the game - excluding a frantic goalmouth scramble that saw a fantastic Andre Onana save and a goal-line clearance. But the hosts coped well with the early setback and found a way back into the game after 29 minutes, when Hakim Ziyech squeezed a free-kick through the wall and past Onana, who prematurely had shuffled to his left.

Galatasaray grew in confidence from that moment on and continued to see a lot of the ball, with United looking to create openings on the break. The Turkish champions created good late chances via Wilfried Zaha and Mauro Icardi, with the former’s shot blocked by Harry Maguire, while Icardi latched onto a long pass and slotted the ball beyond Onana, only to see the offside flag raised.

After the break, much like the first half, United started quickest and found the back of the net within the first 10 minutes. Aaron Wan-Bissaka advanced down the right and picked out McTominay at the near post, who coolly slotted it into the net.

But, as has been the case with United in Europe this season, the frantic nature of the team's approach meant they couldn’t hold onto their lead. Ziyech for the second time on the night netted a free-kick, with Onana this time flapping at the ex-Chelsea man’s whipped ball. Kerem Akturkoglu, who caused the Red Devils real issues at Old Trafford, then drew Galatasaray level when his excellent first touch and curled finish beat Onana at his near post.

It was a goal that meant United were dropping to second place, and Garnacho, McTominay and Facundo Pellistri all went close as the Ten Hag's side tried to restore their advantage, while Fernandes hit the post from about 30 yards with just four minutes remaining.

Pellistri had the final opening which was saved by Muselera, on a dramatic, entertaining, yet ultimately frustrating night. Here's how we rated the United players...
