Manchester United are ending the summer transfer window with a slight sense of panic, as the club rush to complete several last-minute deals.

This was not the window Erik ten Hag and the club’s hierarchy envisaged, especially after a positive start to the summer that saw the Red Devils sign Mason Mount., Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund. Yet the subsequent weeks have been less smooth, with United struggling to sell and therefore finding it impossible to find the funds to reinvest into the first-team squad.

It’s why the final days of the summer market have been fraught, and there’s a concern the Red Devils could head into the autumn months with major flaws in the squad.

Below, we’ve answered all the pressing questions ahead of United’s transfer deadline day…

Can we expect more business?

Yes, quite a bit more. United will wrap up a deal for a back-up goalkeeper before the deadline shuts, while a left-back is also expected to arrive on loan. Midfield is an area United would like to strengthen, but finances could prevent them completing any moves in that department.

Who could Man Utd sign?

The goalkeeper mentioned above is Fernbahce’s Alatay Bayindir, with negotiations beginning last week for the Turkish stopper. As for left-back, a host of options were linked with the Red Devils earlier in the week, but the latest reports indicate Tottenham Hotspur’s Sergio Reguilon will join on loan before the 11pm window.

In midfield, Sofyan Amrabat has been United’s first-choice target for a number of weeks, but the club don’t have much wiggle room in terms of finances. Reports this week have indicated that a loan move looks more likely than a permanent transfer. There’s always the chance United do explore the loan market in the final hours of the window, but any arrivals are not likely to be permanent.

Who could Man Utd sell?

Dean Henderson's departure to Crystal Palace was confirmed on Thursday for a fee of up to £20m. The Red Devils will also hope to conclude transfers for Eric Bailly, Donny van de Beek and Mason Greenwood, but all are proving difficult to sell. Elsewhere, Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth reported on Thursday night that Fulham are interested in signing Scott McTominay, a player who the Red Devils are willing to sell.

Why is there a feeling of panic at Man Utd?

United are never far away from a crisis, and the end of the summer window has once again highlighted the club’s long-standing fragilities. While an unfortunate run of injuries has resulted in the left-back search, the sheer variety of names mentioned hints at a frantic approach behind the scenes.

Finances are a growing concern as well, especially given United once vastly outperformed their vials in terms of annual revenue. Yet overspending in previous windows has impacted this summer’s budget, while the Glazers’ refusal to invest funds has again held the club back. It means Amarabat’s arrival is uncertain, and United could head into the season without addressing many of the issues outlined ahead of the window by Ten Hag.

Meanwhile, an inability to sell efficiently has been a huge drawback - had the club sold the likes of Harry Maguire, Bailly, McTominay, Van de Beek and Anthony Martial, this could have been a very different window.

What about youth-team players?

Charlie McNeill is set to join Stevenage on loan for the remainder of the campaign, while Shola Shoretire could also depart on a short-term basis.United are also willing to let Marc Jurado depart permanently, while Hannibal is expected to remain. Elsewhere, Teden Mengi and Alvaro Fernandez have been linked with moves away from the club.
