Manchester United are expected to name a similar team on Thursday to the one that beat Newport.

Manchester United’s Premier League campaign begins anew when they travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday night.

Oddly, the Red Devils had just one league match in the whole of January but face five games in February, beginning with Wolves. United started the midweek round of fixtures in eighth place but, depending on results elsewhere, could slip into the bottom half of the table.

Yet Erik ten Hag will hope his rejuvenated squad can take three vital points at Molineux. The United boss did welcome back several players over the winter break, with Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Casemiro all starting against Newport County in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Kobbie Mainoo is also continuing to shine - and grabbed his first senior goal on Sunday - Alejandro Garnacho is offering an ever-more reliable outlet on the wing, while Bruno Fernandes earned BBC Sport’s man of the match award at the weekend. United should also have Andre Onana back and available following Cameroon’s elimination at the Africa Cup of Nations.

But one man who wasn’t involved on Sunday was Marcus Rashford. The attacker missed the game after he skipped training on Friday after enjoying a night out in Belfast, the day before.

The 26-year-old is available for the game at Wolves with United claiming he has ‘taken responsibility’ for his actions. Ten Hag now faces the choice of whether to reinstate Rashford into the team immediately, ironically in the same fixture where he was last season dropped for being late to a team meeting.
