Erik ten Hag has said Marcus Rashford was dropped from Saturday’s Premier League game against Wolverhampton Wanderers due to ‘internal disciplinary’ issues.

The Manchester United forward has scored in both of his matches since returning from the World Cup, in wins over Burnley and Nottingham Forest, and Rashford has enjoyed a resurgence in recent months at club and international level.

The 25-year-old has scored 13 goals in 26 appearances this season, and recently claimed he is hoping to net a career high tally this campaign, with his previous best of 22 coming in 2019/20.

Therefore, it was a surprise to see Rashford dropped for the trip to Molineux. In his place, United selected Alejandro Garnacho in the wide areas along with Antony. "We have a good team and Alejandro comes in,” Ten Hag told BT Sport. “He did really well in the last couple of games and made huge progress. I am expecting him to contribute and expecting him to bring his skills.”

Meanwhile, Luke Shaw continued at centre-back with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof on the bench as both struggled with illness in the last week. "Harry has to recover from illness and there are many games to come,” Ten Hag told BT. “But tactical-wise, this [Shaw at centre-back] fits really good for the Wolves game, both when defending and in offence."

Scott McTominay has also been ill recently and missed out on the squad altogether. So did Lisandro Martinez, who only returned to training this week following his exploits with Argentina at the World Cup. Diogo Dalot was also absent as he continues to recover from a hamstring issue which he picked up Qatar, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka starting at right-back.

United starting XI vs Wolves: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Shaw, Malacia; Casemiro, Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Garnacho; Martial.
