Luke Shaw is a major doubt for Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Everton this weekend.

The defender was replaced in the first half of the Red Devils’ 1-0 win over Brentford on Wednesday, a game in which Marcus Rashford scored the only goal as United moved back into the top four.

Speaking after the match, Erik ten Hag was vague when asked about the extent of the injury, and even failed to reveal where Shaw felt the problem. “I can’t say in this moment. I have to wait until tomorrow for the diagnosis,” Ten Hag said on Wednesday. “He came straight off, we didn’t want to risk, but we have to wait [to see] the outcome.”

If Shaw is unavailable to play, Tyrell Malacia is expected to come in at left-back. Meanwhile, Casemiro is set to serve the final match of his four-game suspension on Saturday. The Brazilian was sent off in the 0-0 draw with Southampton and will be available again for the clash away to Nottingham Forest next week.

Christian Erisken might also be an option for the trip to the City Ground but is unlikely to be back in time for the clash with the Toffees. Eriksen returned to team training on Tuesday as he continues to recover from a long-term ankle injury he suffered in January. Elsewhere, Tom Heaton and Alejandro Garnacho are also out with ankle issues, while Donny van de Beek won’t play again this season with a knee problem.

As for Everton, they’ll be without Abdoulaye Doucoure after he was sent off in Monday’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur. The midfielder struck Harry Kane in the face and will now serve a three-match ban.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin also remains sidelined through injury and won’t be involved when Sean Dyche’s side come to Old Trafford this weekend. Speaking last month about the forward, Dyche admitted he is ‘monitoring’ Calvert-Lewin’s hamstring problem. Andros Townsend, who hasn’t played at all this season due an ACL issue, is the final absentee for the Merseyside club.

Doubts: Shaw (United)

Ruled out: Heaton, Casemiro, Eriksen, Van de Beek, Garnacho (United), Doucoure, Townsend, Calvert-Lewin (Everton)
