Erik ten Hag has given a fitness update on Luke Shaw, who was replaced with an injury in Wednesday night’s Premier League win over Brentford.

Marcus Rashford’s goal on 27 minutes handed Manchester United an important three points against a Brentford side who managed just one shot on target all night at Old Trafford. The win sees United move back into the top four ahead of Tottenham Hotspur.

But the victory did come with a sour note as Shaw was forced off in the first half after he appeared to be holding his hamstring in discomfort. The defender was replaced on 37 minutes by Tyrell Malacia, who put in a good display in Shaw’s absence.

Asked about Shaw in his post-match press conference, Ten Hag said: “I can't say in this moment. I have to wait until tomorrow for the diagnosis. He came straight off, we didn’t want to risk, but we have to wait [to see] the outcome.” The United boss also refused to reveal where Shaw had suffered the injury, claiming it was ‘personal’.

The defender has enjoyed a superb season for the Red Devils and signed a new United contract on Tuesday. Shaw has also been a regular in the United team and hasn’t missed a Premier League match since September. However, it looks like he could sit out the Red Devils’ next encounter, which comes against  Everton on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Ten Hag also revealed Anthony Martial is not yet fit to start for United as he continues to recuperate from a hip injury. The Frenchman came off the bench in the second half and, despite Wout Weghorst being dropped from the side, Ten Hag feels he cannot yet hand Martial a start, even with the no.9 being back in training for over a month.

Asked if Martial is ready to be named in the starting line-up yet, Ten Hag replied: “No, otherwise he was an option. But I don’t think in this moment he is game fit enough to have a start.

“There is also a prevention,” he added, on a player who has started just one game in the last three months. “When you see Anthony Martial’s record over the last years, you have to be really careful to plan it. It can be very physical and I [don’t] want to take the risk because I know when he is on the pitch he has a great impact on our performance.”
