Casemiro will miss Manchester United’s next four matches following his red card against Southampton on Sunday.

The Brazilian was dismissed for a robust challenge on Carlos Alcaraz in the latter stages of the first half. The midfielder lunged into the tackle and, as the ball bounced back up, his foot went over the ball and caught the Southampton man on the shin.

While Casemiro was a tad unfortunate, the challenge probably merited a red card given its reckless nature, with referee Anthony Taylor showing a straight red card after reviewing the pitchside monitor. It was Casemiro’s second red card of the season, with the former Real Madrid man also given his marching orders against Crystal Palace at the start of February.

A straight red card for dangerous play receives an automatic three-game ban, but an extra match will be added given Casemiro has already been sent off this season. That means Casemiro will miss United’s next four Premier League matches, and will have been suspended for eight of 16 domestic games by the time his ban comes to an end.

Those fixtures include next week’s FA Cup quarter-final tie with Fulham and the Premier League matches against Newcastle United (2 April), Brentford (5 April) and Everton (8 April).

The issue is only compounded by long-term injuries to Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek, while Marcel Sabitzer has missed the last two with a knock. It leaves United with just three midfield options: Scott McTominay, Fred and Bruno Fernandes.

Casemiro’s red card on Sunday also limited United’s attacking output in the 0-0 draw against Southampton, with the visitors the better side in the latter stages at Old Trafford.
