Manchester United returned to winning ways in the Premier League on Wednesday as they beat Brentford 1-0 at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford grabbed the only goal of a game that United were by far the better side in, and the three points saw the Red Devils move back into the Champions League places once again.

United started the game slowly and struggled to break Brentford down in the opening stages. But after Scott McTominay and Antony saw shots sail just off target, the Red Devils took the lead after 27 minutes.

Marcel Sabitzer delicately cushioned a header into the path of Rashford inside the box, and the no.10 fired the ball beyond David Raya in the away goal.

From there, United were well on top and Antony twice shot wide from distance, while Rashford continued to threaten with a strike that deflected off target and a fizzed cross that was held by Raya. Meanwhile, a toothless Brentford only managed one chance of note in the first half: an Ivan Toney header which never looked like troubling David de Gea.

The second period began with the same pair involved in a Brentford chance, but thankfully for De Gea, his clearance deflected off Toney and went wide rather than into the net. But the Red Devils were still on top, and Antony curled wide soon after, while Sabitzer saw his shot held.

Brentford did go close with a chance from Kevin Schade on 67 minutes, and De Gea did well to fly out of his goal and narrow the angle for the striker, who saw his attempt blocked by the United no.1.

Fred shot over after 80 minutes in what was a quiet end to a relatively dull affair at Old Trafford, while Toney chipped over from the edge of the box in injury-time. Here’s how we rated the United players...
