Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Dimitar Berbatov have been confirmed as the latest former Manchester United legends for the club’s game against Liverpool on 21 May.
The former Red Devils trio will also be joined by Dwight Yorke and Quinton Fortune for the legends game at Old Trafford next month.
Scholes is one of United’s most successful players, winning 25 trophies during his career with the club. The ex-midfielder is the Red Devils’ third all-time appearances holder with 718 games.
Butt returns to the Theatre of Dreams having previously worked for United as their Head of Academy, while also spending the first 12 years of his playing career with the club.
Former striker and one-time record signing Berbatov returns for the clash with United’s rivals Liverpool. The Bulgarian will hasn’t played at Old Trafford since departing the club in 2012, with the ex no.9 memorably scoring a hat-trick against the Merseyside outfit in 2010.
Speaking about the occasion, he said: “I remember my time at Old Trafford as a really special period in my career.
“With this in mind, it’s fantastic to have the chance to relive this when I return to Manchester to play in the Legends of the North match in May. Fans still mention my hat-trick against Liverpool, so I know what this game means. It’s going to be a magnificent day!
“When I was at the club, I always enjoyed working with the Foundation – especially the Christmas hospital visits – and I look forward to supporting them again.”
The game is in support of the Manchester United Foundation with all profits going to the charity which helps young people in the community.
Fellow former striker Yorke also expressed his delight at being able to take part in the event and help the course.
“Our Foundation supports children local to Greater Manchester and around the world doing a lot of good work. These exhibition matches help to raise funds to continue that work, so I really hope to see the fans come out and support us.
“Both sets of fans will get to see some of their all-time favourite players as well – it’s called Legends of the North because there is a history there with these players who have done wonderful things for these football clubs, in both teams. It should be a fantastic day.”
Bryan Robson will manage the United legends team which already boast the likes of Patrice Evra, Diego Forlan and Jaap Stam.
Tickets, which are priced from £8.50 for kids under 16 and £26 for adults, are available from United’s website here.
