Manchester United could be gifted a favourable group stage in next year's Champions League as they seed in pot 2 for the upcoming draw. Meanwhile, it’s no surprise to see defending champions Manchester City in pot 1.

The Red Devils booked their place in the competition thanks to a third-place Premier League finish and return to Champions League football after spending last season competing in the Europa League.

United's run in the 2021/22 edition of the tournament came to an end in the round of 16 against Atletico Madrid and Erik ten Hag will be looking to progress further against Europe's greats over the upcoming campaign.

This year's Champions League was of course won by noisy neighbours City to complete a historic treble, the first English side to do so since Sir Alex Ferguson's United side of 1999.

Supporters will be hoping to see a number of big additions this summer to a squad that has been rejuvenated under ten Hag in order to compete on multiple fronts next season and add to the Carabao Cup silverware the club picked up this season.

At the Etihad, questions over squad depth aren’t nearly so prevalent after this year’s treble but once parties have died down, the eyes of the footballing world will turn to Guardiola and his side to see how many titles they can defend next season.

The draw from Champions League group stage takes place on 25 August and that is when United and City fans will be able to start planning their trips abroad and dreaming of the European nights to come.

Each knockout group is made of four sides, one taken from each of the four ranking pots that UEFA uses to separate the seeds.

Which clubs have already qualified for the Champions League 2023/24?

Joining United from England are Premier League winners City, runners-up Arsenal - who return after a six-season absence - and fourth-placed Newcastle United.

La Liga in Spain was won convincingly by Catalan giants Barcelona this year and they will be back in Champions League action next season. Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will join them. Real Sociedad finished fourth in the Spanish top flight and will also be there.

Sevilla's disappointing 12th-place finish in La Liga was far off Champions League form, but the club are also in the group stages having won the Europa League this season.

Bayern Munich pipped Borussia Dortmund at the post to win this year's Bundesliga and both of those big guns will appear in the Champions League. RB Leipzig and Union Berlin, who continue their rise on the European stage, are also in the draw.

Napoli's phenomenal season in Italy saw them romp to Serie A victory and a place in the Champions League alongside the well-known trio of Lazio, AC Milan and this year's runners-up Inter Milan.

In France, Ligue 1 winners Paris Saint-Germain are qualified. Lens finished second in that league and will return to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years.

Elsewhere, Eredivisie winners Feyenoord are in the mix along with Primeira Liga top two Benfica and Porto. SPL winners Celtic are also there along with Serbia side Red Star Belgrade.

Austrian League winners RB Salzburg are also in the group stage with Ukrainian League victors Shakhtar Donetsk.

What are the pots for the Champions League 2023/24?

The pots haven't yet been finalised for next year's Champions League but they are nearly there.
