Man Utd player ratings gallery - Six players earn 7/10 in Carabao Cup final win over Newcastle

Manchester United ended their six-year trophy drought on Sunday thanks to a 2-0 Wembley win.

Manchester United won their first silverware of the Erik ten Hag era on Sunday as they beat Newcastle United 2-0 in the final of Carabao Cup.

A Casemiro header and a deflected own-goal from Sven Bender gave the Red Devils a first-half lead, and Erik ten Hag’s side put in a disciplined defensive display after the break to limit Newcastle’s scoring opportunities.

The Magpies started the game on the front foot and moved the ball well, although it was Loris Karius rather than David de Gea who was twice called into action in the opening quarter of a hour, with the former Liverpool stopper keeping out Wout Weghorst’s left-foot effort and a curled shot from Antony at the corner of the box.

Newcastle responded with a Fabian Schar header that went over, before David de Gea made a great save to deny Allan Saint-Maximin after the winger bypassed Diogo Dalot inside the box and then forced the United goalkeeper to make a reaction stop at his near post.

Less than two minutes later and Newcastle were made to rue missing such a great opportunity as Casemiro headed United into the lead. The Brazilian connected perfectly with Luke Shaw’s cross and, after a nervous VAR check for offside, the goal was awarded.

And United made it two soon after as Weghorst slipped the ball into Marcus Rashford’s path in the area, and the attacker’s initial shot deflected in off Botman, wrong-footing Karius in the process.

The Magpies spurned another great chance before the end of the half, with Dan Burn heading over at the back post, while Weghorst tested Karius from the edge of the box with a left-foot strike.

It took just 19 seconds for United to fashion a scoring opportunity in the second period, although Fred scuffed it wide, while Antony and Bruno Fernandes then curled shots off target in the early moments after the break.

But it was a half that lacked a huge number of scoring chances, with Newcastle on top but failing to create openings. Joelinton had perhaps the best chance, when his goal-bound shot was blocked by LIsandro Martinez.

As the game moved closer to a conclusion, it was United who had more openings. Rashford forced Karius to keep out a strike from outside the area, while Marcel Sabitzer twice shot over. Aaron Wan-Bissaka then had a shot which was held. At the other end, De Gea could only watch as a Jacob Murphy effort from around 30 yards sailed just wide, while the goalkeeper also had to claw away a Bruno Guimaraes header.

Bruno Fernandes nearly added a third in injury-time but his shot was saved in what was a comfortable finish for United, who ended a six-year trophy-less period. Here’s how we rated the players...
