Rio Ferdinand is backing Manchester United to make a move for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The Red Devils are on the offensive in the transfer window, hoping to strengthen significantly over the course of the summer. Mason Mount looks to be the club’s marquee arrival, set to arrive for around £60million. But there are other areas Erik ten Hag needs to strengthen ahead of the new season, and one of them is in goal.

David De Gea’s contract has expired, and while there could yet be further contact between the club and the player, United appear to be looking elsewhere for now.

Inter Milan star Onana has emerged as an option having established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe over recent years. Onana and his teammates made the Champions League final in the season just gone, and his performances have seen Inter slap on a price tag of well above £60million.

Though, while United are set to strengthen significantly this summer, they don’t have an unlimited budget, and they also need to add to their £60million capture of Mount by signing a striker - which is not going to be a cheap objective to complete.

That’s where the Onana deal could come apart, but club legend Ferdinand believes United are going to ‘go for it’ this summer as they look to secure a long-term goalkeeper.

“Bids are going in, bruv. I think they’ll go for it. I think they’re gonna go for it, he’s someone they want to try and get,” Ferdinand said on his podcast.

“But the problem is Inter’s pricing.” Ferdinand explains. “Manchester United haven’t got an open cheque book and the takeover won’t affect that in this window.”
