Manchester City head into their final game of the Premier League season this Sunday knowing a win against Aston Villa will wrap up a seventh top-flight title.

The Sky Blues are a point ahead of Liverpool after 37 games, meaning three points against the Villans will secure top spot in the table.

But given the form of Jurgen Klopp’s men, it’s likely a draw may not be enough. They host Wolverhampton Wanderers at the same time as Villa play at the Etihad, with Wolves badly out of form in the final weeks of the season.

There’s also a million-to-one shot of a title play-off should City lose 6-0 at home to Villa, and Liverpool draw 5-5 at Anfield, with all 10 matches kicking off at 4pm on the final weekend of the campaign.

It’s a day which will be permeated with a wide range of narratives and storylines; Steven Gerrrard could help Liverpool finish top, Jack Grealish might beat Villa to claim the trophy, Philippe Coutinho will be looking to down City, while childhood Red Conor Coady will face the Merseysiders.

Chuck in that Liverpool might equal United’s record of 20 top-flight titles, City could move to second in terms of Premier League crowns, while there are individual accolades such as the Golden Boot and Golden Glove to be sorted.

Sunday will also bring an end to another chapter in the remarkable rivalry between City and Liverpool, with both sides showing incredible consistency in the latter stages of the season.

Since that draw at the Etihad in early April, the clubs have an identical record from their respective six league games, winning five and drawing once in that period. But just one slip up on Sunday will likely prove terminal for either side’s title aspirations.

However, the omens are good for City, who last lost to Villa in 2013 and have won 11 of the previous 12 meetings with the West Midland side.

They also have the advantage of the claret and blues being allocated just three days to recover after drawing 1-1 with Burnley on Thursday night, while City were most recently in action last Sunday when they came from behind to draw 2-2 with West Ham United.

City had looked set to be without John Stones and Kyle Walker, until Sky Sports reported on Thursday that the pair were both back in training.

Whether they’ll be involved at the weekend is another matter, however, with Guardiola claiming earlier this month that the pair, and Ruben Dias, would miss the remainder of the season through injury.

There have also been doubts about Aymeric Laporte and Fernandinho, both of whom were expected to miss the trip to the London Stadium last weekend, but recovered in time and played the full 90 minutes.

As for Nathan Ake, he’s nursing an ongoing ankle issue which has severely limited his game-time over the past month, yet he should be available if called upon.

While there are issues in defence, in the more advanced areas City have a clean bill of health and aren’t missing any midfielders or attackers.

Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling were all unused substitutes against West Ham and could offer a fresher option from the bench. Pep Guardiola tends to rotate throughout the season, but the final game of the campaign means there’s nothing to consider in the coming weeks.

As for Villa, Ezri Konsa will miss the remainder of the campaign due to an injury he sustained against Crystal Palace last week.

Kortney Hause is definitely out with a long-term problem, while Emiliano Martinez and Leon Bailey are doubts.
