Sunday’s final round of Premier League fixtures will see a third title battle between Manchester City and Liverpool concluded on the last day of the season.
The previous two came in 2014 and 2019, while this is the fourth time City could wrap up a league triumph in the final game.
No club have been involved in more decisive closing fixtures than Manchester United, with the Red Devils playing in six throughout the years, although the most recent came a decade ago.
This weekend will be the ninth time in 30 years of the Premier League that the champions have been settled on the final weekend.
For City, they know a win over Aston Villa will be enough to claim a sixth crown in the division, whie Liverpool must hope Pep Guardiola’s men slip-up and they beat Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.
City are a point clear of their nearest rivals heading into what will be a dramatic and decisive final weekend of the season.
There are also no shortage of sub-plots and storylines, with Steven Gerrard potentially able to hand Liverpool a record-equalling 20th top-flight title, while the £100 man Jack Grealish might beat his boyhood Villa to lift the trophy.
Ahead of Sunday’s game we’re reflecting on every year that the Premier League champion has been decided on the last day of the season…
1. 1994/95
The first final-day title decider came in the league’s third season when, despite losing against Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers claimed their only Premier League crown. Manchester United’s goalless draw to West Ham United prevented them from winning a third consecutive title.
2. 1995/96
A race perhaps remembered best for that infamous Kevin Keegan rant. Despite the warnings of the Newcastle United manager, the Red Devils ‘went to Middlesbrough’ and grabbed the win that secured top spot, while Keegan’s men drew with Tottenham Hotspur.
3. 1998/99
One that supporters of United remember fondly as they came from behind to beat Spurs at Old Trafford, with David Beckham and Andy Cole netting to take their crown back off Arsenal. The Gunners beat Aston Villa, but it proved irrelevant as United began a nine-day period that resulted in them wrapping up an unprecedented treble.
4. 2007/08
It took nine years for the league to next be concluded on the last weekend. Again, it was United who finished with a flourish as they won 2-0 at Wigan Athletic and collected the trophy ahead of Chelsea. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men then beat the Blues in the Champions League final 10 days later.
