The final day of the Premier League season is expected to throw up plenty of twists and turns, with Manchester City or Liverpool set to be crowned champions.
Following the latter’s 2-1 victory away to Southampton on Tuesday night, it means City head into Sunday a point clear of their nearest rivals and will need to beat Aston Villa to secure a sixth Premier League title.
Meanwhile, Liverpool also face a side from the West Midlands, with Jurgen Klopp’s men hosting Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.
The final day of the season always provides opportunities for players to become heroes and this season is no different, especially after the title tussle City and Liverpool have provided over the last nine months.
But who could ultimately decide where the title ends up? We’ve picked out some of the more interesting characters and sub-plots which could determine who finishes top of the pile…
1. Steven Gerrard
A man who knows more than anyone about trying to win titles for Liverpool, although it’s a feat he never achieved during his playing days. Now, the Villa boss and boyhood Red has the opportunity to deliver a crushing blow to City and hand Liverpool top spot.
2. Jurgen Klopp
Aiming to become just the fifth manager in Premier League history to win multiple titles, the German also has hopes of a quadruple to contend with. However, failing to overtake City on Sunday will end those dreams.
3. Pep Guardiola
Could win his fourth Premier League title and become the second manager after Sir Alex Ferguson to claim more than three crowns. It would be an especially sweet success for Guardiola after all the doubts surrounding his decision to not sign a striker last summer.
4. Fernandinho
Could end his time at the Etihad by winning another league title. A win on Sunday will see Fernandinho earn a fifth Premier League crown and no player in City history has won more. He’s also expected to start at centre-back against Villa.
