Phil Foden has revealed he has suffered a recurrence of a foot injury in what has been a brilliant week for the Manchester City midfielder.

Foden picked up the injury during the Manchester derby back in January and was sidelined for three games before failing to force his way back into the line-up due to the brilliant form of Riyad Mahrez and Jack Grealish. The 22-year-old has since netted four goals over the last week or so and looks to have made his way back into Pep Guardiola’s plans, however his latest injury may be a worry.

Speaking after Man City’s win over Newcastle United, Foden said: “It was the derby, I had it just before but it wasn’t too serious then. I damaged it a bit more against United. Unfortunately today I’ve kind of hurt it again today but now I need to rest up. We’ve got two days off now so hopefully I’ll have the chance to rest it.

“We are always playing and there is no time to rest, sometimes your feet just need to rest and that was it really. It goes through moments, it’s one of those injuries where physios can’t really help, it goes when it goes, you have to learn how to manage it.

“Whether it’s not training as much, just doing partial training, trying to look after it, I’m just trying to find that balance, trying to keep feeling good. Obviously when I’m not on the football pitch, I’m very frustrated but I feel like every player goes through those moments – whether it’s a big injury or a niggle. I’m just happy to have passed that stage and to be back performing.”

Foden proved to be a key part of an impressive 2-0 win over Newcastle at the weekend. The midfielder took only 15 minutes before he opened the scoring for Guardiola’s side, before Bernardo Silva doubled their lead in the second half. The Magpies were hoping to bounce back from their Carabao Cup final defeat to Man United, however City proved too tough to break down in what was actually a positive performance from the visitors.

Thankfully for Foden, Man City will have had a week off by the time they take on Crystal Palace on Saturday evening. The England international will be hoping he is fit for the trip to Selhurst Park if he doesn’t want to risk slipping down the pecking order once again. Foden has 17 goal contributions in all competitions this season and is currently Man City’s second top goalscorer, while Mahrez has 18 and Grealish has nine.
