Luke Mbete picked up the injury earlier this week.

On-loan Manchester City defender Luke Mbete is set for a prolonged period on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury.

The 21-year-old is currently on loan at League One side Northampton Town and sustained the injury during Tuesday’s 4-2 defeat to Bolton Wanderers.

Mbete pulled up in the latter stages of the game against his former club and was seen clutching his hamstring before he was stretchered off with 15 minutes remaining at Sixfields.

Speaking after the game, manager Jon Brady said: "I don't think it's good for Luke. We know it's a hamstring injury but we're waiting for the results on it.

“The signs are that it'll be a period of time that he's out for. Potentially it'll be more months than weeks. “He was quite upset because he felt in a lot of pain. It's a position that we're having no luck in and I just feel for Luke because he's a cracking young man.”

Mbete has only missed one game since moving to the Midlands club on loan, and has made seven appearances in total, playing mainly at left-back. The Cobblers are currently 19th in the table after eight games and face a trip to Wrexham this weekend.

As for Mbete, he will hope it’s not a similar situation to youngster Mahamadou Susoho, who cut short his loan at Peterborough United after just one game due to a long-term injury.

Northampton is Mbete’s fourth loan, after previous spells with Huddersfield Town, Bolton and Den Bosch. The defender has made three appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side, including a cameo in City’s Champions League last-16 second leg tie against Sporting Lisbon.
