A new era of men’s white-ball cricket is officially under way following the announcement of Jos Buttler as captain.

Buttler is a hard-hitting cricketer who has become a huge name in the world of white-ball cricket.

Who has Jos Buttler replaced as captain?

Jos Buttler replaced Eoin Morgan as captain of the men’s white-ball team in an announcement Thursday afternoon (30 June).

Morgan has retired from international cricket, having played almost 350 matches over all three formats of the game.

From almost immediately after Morgan announced his retirement, Jos Buttler’s name was one of those being mentioned to replace him as captain.

When will his first match as captain be?

Buttler won’t need to wait too long for his first match as England captain, as an ODI series against India gets underway on 12 July.

England will play three matches against India, quickly followed by a three-match series against South Africa later in July.

What is Jos Buttlers record for England?

Jos Buttler has played for Lancashire since 2014 following a move from his home county of Somerset.

For his country, Buttler has become a player synonymous with scoring lots of runs in a short amount of time.

In International T20 matches Buttler has scored 2,140 runs in just 79 matches, and in 125 One Day International matches he has hit 4,120 runs.

What did Jos Buttler say following his appointment?

Talking to the ECB, Buttler said it was an honour to be given the captaincy, and also thanked his predecessor Morgan.

He said: "I would like to offer my sincere thanks and gratitude to Eoin Morgan for his outstanding leadership over the past seven years.

“It has been the most memorable period for everyone involved. He has been an inspirational leader, and it has been fantastic to play under him. There are lots of things that I have learnt from him that I’ll take into this role.

"It is a great honour to take over from Eoin, and the place he has left English white-ball cricket in is exciting, and I’m inspired for the challenges ahead.

"There is excellent strength-in-depth in the white-ball squads, and I’m looking forward to leading the teams out for the series that are coming up against India starting next week and later in July against South Africa.

"It is the greatest honour to captain your country, and when I have had the chance to step in, in the past, I have loved doing it. I can’t wait to take this team forward."

When is the next Cricket World Cup?

Buttler’s appointment as captain comes ahead of a busy 18 months of white-ball cricket, which includes two world cup tournaments.

The 20-over World Cup takes place in Australia and New Zealand this winter, while the 50-over version will be held in India in October 2023.

Buttler will be planning to lead the side at both of these tournaments, as well as various series in between.
