'Motivation' - What Patrick Dorgu said about Liverpool FC links as Manchester United in talks for signing

Man Utd are looking to sign a left wing-back in the January transfer window.

Manchester United are in talks to sign Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu in the January transfer window.

Ruben Amorim has prioritised the addition of a left wing-back this month as he looks to transform United's fortunes and bring balance to their side, with Dorgu viewed as an affordable and attainable option. It is understood there is no agreement in place for the 20-year-old to move to Old Trafford but talks are progressing that could see the young defender become Amorim's first senior signing.

United hope to fund a move for Dorgu by allowing both Antony and Tyrell Malacia to leave the club on loan, while they are still hopeful of securing permanent sales for Marcus Rashford and Casemiro. Alejandro Garnacho could also be sold amid interest from Napoli in his signature.

Dorgu only signed a new four-year contract with Lecce back in October but the relegation-threatened side could be tempted to sell the starlet in order to raise valuable funds. His proposed arrival would allow Diogo Dalot to revert to a regular role at right wing-back, with Noussair Mazraoui seen as cover for both flanks when required.

It is not the first time Dorgu has been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Liverpool and Man City both previously tipped to make a move for the Danish international. Two years ago, the versatile full-back admitted those high-profile links motivated him to play even better in Italy.

“I really just take it as motivation, that when the big teams look at me, it is because I am doing the right thing and must continue," he told Ekstra Bladet back in September 2023. "Then it’s just a matter of time before the big teams come knocking.”
