Man Utd academy graduate signed for £25m by Everton wanted by EFL club as Leeds United 'eye' ex-Man City man
The latest transfer news and rumours involving Manchester United and Manchester City
It was a mixed day of Premier League action for Manchester United and Manchester City on Sunday afternoon. The Red Devils slumped to a 3-1 home loss against Brighton and Hove Albion with Ruben Amorim branding his team as the worst side in the history of the club.
For City, they romped to a 6-0 win at Ipswich Town to move into the top four. They sit above Newcastle United on goal difference but could be pushed down into fifth once again if Chelsea beat Wolves in their game on Monday night. Both Manchester clubs now turn their focus to European action with City facing a huge Champions League game against Paris Saint-Germain. Both clubs are at risk of being knocked out of the competition with PSG outside the pay-off spots in 25th while City sit 22nd, just one point above the French club.
Meanwhile, United welcome rangers to Old Trafford for an all-British clash with just one point between the two teams. As both Manchester clubs continue their transfer business, some of the latest transfer news involves former players from both clubs with two ex-Manchester-based stars linked with Championship moves.
United academy graduate Michael Keane is the subject of interest from Premier League promotion hopefuls Sheffield United. That’s according to the Sheffield Star, who report the centre back has been identified as an option following a long-term injury to Harry Souttar. Keane has only made 13 appearances in all competitions for Everton this term due to injury and with James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite being the preferred options in the central defence.
Keane joined United at the age of 11 but left for Burnley on a permanent deal for around £2m in order to guarantee more playing time back in 2015 after an initial loan spell. He impressed with the Clarets to turn earn himself a move to Everton, with the Toffees paying £25m for his services. He could be on the move again if he sees Bramall Lane as an attractive option. Sheffield United are second in the table, one point behind league leaders Leeds United.
Discussing his decision to leave United, Keane told the Guardian over seven years ago: “I always felt I would be a Manchester United player. The coaches used to say to me that sometimes they would send other players out on loan to help them get a move but that was never the case with me. They saw it as experience for me because they thought I was good enough to get in the first team when I came back. But then obviously Sir Alex left and it all changed.
“The first call I got was that Burnley wanted to take me on a permanent deal. I didn’t really want to go permanently at first and pushed for it just to be a loan to begin with. Burnley were in the Premier League and I thought that if I did well it would help my chances of proving to Louis van Gaal that I was good enough. And I did do well. It just wasn’t enough [for Van Gaal]. So I ended up signing permanently and I was really happy to do that because I’ve loved it ever since. I do feel sometimes that things could have been different [at United] but I don’t regret anything because the move has definitely been the best thing for me.”
Leeds United 'eye' move for ex-striker Kelechi Iheanacho
Former Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho is the subject of interest from Championship side Leeds United, according to Football Insider. The Nigerian international made his senior debut for City in 2015 before leaving for Leicester in 2017. He spent seven years at the King Power Stadium but left last summer after deciding against a new contract with the club. At the end of July he joined La Liga side Sevilla on a free transfer.
However, he has struggled to establish himself in Spain and is said to be available for loan this month. Leeds are challenging for promotion to the Premier League after they were beaten in the Championship play-off final last term. City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, on loan at Ipswich Town, was tipped for a return to Elland Road if the Whites went up. City's Premier League rivals Wolves and Ipswich have been credited with an interest in Iheanacho, who has earned 57 international caps with Nigeria while scoring 15 goals.
