Former Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson received sympathy from his former Old Trafford teammates after he was forced off less than 20 minutes into Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup tie.

The 26-year-old went down injured during United’s home Carabao Cup tie with Crystal Palace and received treatment on the field before being replaced by Sam Johnstone. Henderson left United for Selhurst Park for an estimated £20million last month.

Henderson appeared visibly upset by his latest injury setback after missing out on the second half of the 2022-23 season due to an injury suffered during his loan spell at Nottingham Forest.

As he left the field he received a hug from former United teammate Anthony Martial while Facundo Pellistri gave the goalkeeper a high five. It was Henderson’s first appearance for Palace since his move from Old Trafford.

Upon leaving United, Henderson said of his time at the club: “This club’s everything to me. I moved away at 14 years old to follow my dream of playing for Manchester United and, thankfully, I followed through and I managed to do that. So that’s something that I’ll always cherish and carry with me everywhere I go.

“I’ve been a supporter since I was a young boy. I’ve come up through the system and love the club through and through. Obviously there have been some highs and some lows at times, but I’ve got great memories here and I’m really happy to be leaving on good terms.

“I think looking back, obviously pulling the shirt on for the first time, away at Luton in the cup. I think that was my debut actually, and that was such a special moment. It was probably a week after that... it didn’t really sink in that I’d actually managed to achieve it. As I say, growing up as a young boy, it’s all I ever wanted and to do that, I’m really pleased.”

United took the lead swiftly after Henderson was forced off with Alejandro Garnacho opening the scoring before Casemiro added a second before the half-hour mark.
