Evans previously enjoyed a nine year stint at Old Trafford under the guidance of Alex Ferguson and is the only remaining player from the club’s last title triumph back in 2013. The 35-year-old returned to the starting line up for the Red Devils for the first time in 3,125 days and registered an assist for Man Utd during a 1-0 victory over Burnley.

That was great,” the beaming Northern Irishman said after his 200th United appearance. “I was really looking forward to it all day.

“I got the shout yesterday in training that I was going to be starting, so I couldn’t wait for the game, really.”

Evans also spoke about his team’s slow start to the season which has seen them lose four of their opening six games for the first time since 1986. He is also adamant that Erik Ten Hag is the right man to lead the team to success.

Speaking to the Independent, he said: “I’ve had some up and down moments at Man United over the years.

“I think you get that if you want to be at the top. You know, it’s going to be very up and down. You’ve got to be able to deal with setbacks and this club is a fantastic club, always want to be challenging at the top, so it’s all part and parcel of it.

“The manager’s got a good thing going here.”

Evans revealed that he was in the crowd for last season’s Carabao Cup triumph over Newcastle. It was the club’s first piece of silverware in six years.

Evans said : “I’m a fan of the club so I was able to watch them a lot last year, been at both finals to support. Like I say, I think the manager’s got a good thing going.”
