Erik ten Hag says he wants to teach his Manchester United players how to control a game better after they threw away a three-goal lead against Coventry.

United were fortunate to reach the final of the FA Cup after a remarkable ending to the match in which they conceded three unanswered goals in the space of just 26 minutes. Victor Torp then looked to have won it for Coventry in the dying seconds of extra-time only for the goal to be disallowed after a VAR check ruled Haji Wright to have been offside in the build-up.

Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund were the heroes as United eventually prevailed 4-2 on penalties, but there were mixed emotions at full-time given the alarming manner in which Ten Hag's side had thrown away such a comfortable lead.

It was made even harder to take due to the fact United have also thrown away leads late on in recent games against Brentford, Chelsea and Liverpool, which clearly indicate their is a huge unresolved issue at large.

Speaking after the shootout win, Ten Hag acknowledged the concern and admitted his side got away with it on Sunday afternoon. "Yes. I see that similar, we can play on very high levels, but in the same match we can go to very low levels in the same game, that’s not explainable," he told reporters.

"Manage the game, take responsibility, take each other in responsibility and make right decisions. I have to teach my players, clear. We have to do better on such occasions. The most difficult you can do is put yourself in a winning position. On several occasions we let each other down. Today we go away with it."
