Son was forced off after 71 minutes of Tottenham’s 3-0 Europa League win over Qarabag on Thursday evening, having received on-pitch treatment for what looked to be a hamstring injury. Ange Postecoglou played down the severity immediately after full-time but the short turnaround leaves little room for recovery.

Spurs travel to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon looking to record a fourth straight win across all competitions but could be without their captain and talisman. And Postecoglou revealed in his pre-game press conference that the South Korean was a major doubt, with all who played on Thursday feeling the strain.

“It’s still early days from last night [against Qarabag],” Postecoglou told The Standard on Friday. “It’s fair to say the boys are fairly tired, the boys who played. Apart from Sonny, everyone is OK.

“Sonny, I don’t think it’s too bad. He wants to train tomorrow [Saturday]. We’ll see how he goes in training tomorrow and see where we from there. We’ve got another day up our sleeve to give him an extra chance.”

United have the benefit of playing 24 hours beforehand during the week, with their Europa League draw at home to FC Twente taking place on Wednesday evening. Tottenham enjoyed a more comfortable scoreline than their weekend hosts but will have run themselves into the ground, having been reduced to 10 men inside seven minutes.

But Postecoglou was able to rotate his side against the Azerbaijan outfit and can call on a number of fresh first-team faces for Sunday. Although he will be without forwards Wilson Odobert (thigh) and Richarlison (calf).

“It’s not ideal that we had a late finish last night and had to play for a long time with 10 men”, the Spurs boss added. “We’ve got some fresh guys as well. Pedro [Porro], [Cristian] Romero, [Rodrigo] Bentancur, [James] Maddison. We still have some freshness there that can help us.”

United are still without £59million summer signing Leny Yoro, although Erik ten Hag provided a positive update on his recovery recently, while Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Victor Lindelof remain sidelined.
