Ralf Rangnick was keen to play down any imminent talk of new signings when he delivered his press conference on Friday.

United’s new interim boss batted away immediate speculation about which players he may want to sign at the club, saying: “Now’s the time to get to know the current squad in detail. The squad is definitely not too small. There is enough players. Maybe after Christmas, there will be a time to talk about possible transfers in the winter.”

Despite United spending big in the last transfer window, they have struggled to prove their worth on the pitch and still have certain gaps in the squad they may need to address to get back to top form.

Our writer Daniel McNeil considers three players which could help boost the team...

1) Tariq Lamptey

The Brighton youngster, who signed from Chelsea has excelled since signing for the South Coast club. Unlucky to be playing when England have a whole host of top right backs, Lamptey has yet to be called up for England. The former Cobham youth player has just started playing again after suffering a long-term ACL injury, but has been playing like he never stopped.

With United’s current right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka not performing well since his £50m move from Crystal Palace, United could turn to Lamptey to help out with their defensive woes.

2) Amadou Haidara

Rangnick could look to lean on his old affiliation with RB Leipzig here, and is reported to be interested in midfielder Amadou Haidara. The Mali international can play as a holding midfielder, but has also been deployed as the number 8 many times. It is thought United could secure the services of Haidara for just over £3million.

3) Christopher Nkunku

Staying with RB Leipzig, Nkunku could also be a possible target. The former PSG midfielder has been in scintillating from for Leipzig this season, and has recently been crowned as the Bundesliga player of the month for October. He has found form for the German club in a variety of positions and has even done well when deployed as the main striker.

This season, he has scored five goals and registered four assists in the 13 games in the league, whilst scoring an impressive seven goals in five Champions League matches.

Aged only 24, Nkunku would add a swagger, finesse, composure and he could arguably be an upgrade on unsettled Paul Pogba.
