Man Utd’s new interim manager Ralf Rangnick has talked about his plans for the rest of the season and beyond in his first press conference on Friday morning.

Rangnick is due to take to the dug-out against Crystal Palace on Sunday - having watched Michael Carrick’s last game in charge against Arsenal from the stands last night.

In front of the media, Rangnick today spelled out some of his priorities in the new role, which will take him to the end of the season before he takes on a two-year consultancy role at the club.

He said there was no way he could turn the United job down, adding: “This is one of the biggest clubs, if not the biggest club, in the world. I’m excited to work with the players we have got here...

“The major target for me is to bring more balance into the team. Even yesterday we conceded two and needed three to win. We concede on average two a game and this is too much.

“I want to bring more balance and more control. Yesterday’s game, for me as the future coach, they are not the games you need. I will try and bring these outstanding, talented players away from their own goal.”

Rangnick deflected speculation about which players he may want to sign at the club, saying: “Now’s the time to get to know the current squad in detail.

“The squad is definitely not too small. There is enough players. Maybe after Christmas, there will be a time to talk about possible transfers in the winter.”

Asked where he hope United would be under his leadership, he said: “Ideally we will be in the top flight regularly, not only in the top four but also playing for titles. This is also something that is in the DNA of the club.

“It’s about winning titles, winning the league, winning the cup, being as successful as you can be in the Champions League and this is also an issue for the New Year, that we are still in the Champions League and depending (on) the draw (we) can hopefully gfet further in that competition.”
