Manchester United and the club’s pursuit of Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat looks set to be one of this year’s blockbuster deadline day stories.

The 27-year-old has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer and is touted as the perfect midfield companion for Casemiro thanks to his no-nonsense and ball-winning style of play.

Erik ten Hag and the club may have to fork out £30 million for the star with negotiations ongoing with the Italian side, even as Ambrabat reportedly prepared to take off on a private jet to Manchester this lunchtime.

It’s an exciting close to the window for Red Devils supporters who are dreaming of that extra reliability in the middle of the park after a somewhat rocky start to this season’s Premier League campaign.

The side’s season opener against Wolves ended in a 1-0 win but was much more of a heart-in-mouth affair than the scoreline suggests while Spurs and Nottingham Forest both managed to put two goals each past the United backline.

Amrabat is aware of his defensive prowess and previous comments following his displays for Morocco in the 2022 World Cup are much reason for optimism.

The midfielder provided one of the tournament’s most memorable moments when he chased French star Kylian Mbappe down the pitch to land a crunching tackle at the very last minute.

Reacting to that famous move, Amrabat told The Athletic: “You can see from the way I ran, and you can see from my face, that I put everything into that sprint.

“Everybody knows what a fantastic player he is and how fast he is. And he was gone! It was 1-0 and I knew if they made it 2-0 the game was finished. We were so near the final. So, yes, I put everything I had into that sprint.”

A completed deal for Amrabat remains to be struck, but that tenacity and never-say-die attitude is certainly reason for excitement among United fans, if a move can be agreed.
