Ruben Amorim names Manchester United star with 'potential to be so much better'

Man Utd scored late on as they defeated Rangers 2-1 in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Ruben Amorim piled the praise on Alejandro Garnacho after his impressive performance in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Rangers. The Argentine forward was one of five changes to the United starting line up for the Europa League match after their weekend defeat to Brighton.

Garnacho is a target for both Chelsea and Napoli this month and has been heavily linked with an exit in the January transfer window. United are not actively looking to sell the academy graduate but they could be tempted to sanction a sale if an appropriate offer comes in before the end of the month, given any fee received would count as pure profit.

The 20-year-old was serenaded by the Stretford End during an impressive individual appearance on Thursday night as he sent a clear reminder of the talent he still has to offer in their new tactical approach.

A lot could change in the final days of the transfer window, but Amorim refused to be drawn on the youngster's future. Asked if he might have played his last home match for the club, the head coach said: "No, I’m focused on the games and he’s here, he’s a player for Manchester United. Was really important for us today and let’s see in the next days."

Garnacho does not have an obvious role to play in the 3-4-2-1 formation favoured by Amorim, with him not naturally suited to either the wing-back or attacking midfield position. It does not mean there is no value in him as a squad player though, and when asked what the Argentine could improve, the head coach added: "I think he’s improving in every aspect of the game, he was better today playing inside, also outside, changing positions, he’s improving the recovering position. You can see it until 90 mins he’s always there recovering and helping, sometimes showing some frustration and that is good because he wants more. I think he has potential to be so much better in every situation in the game. What I can say is he understood what I was trying to do, was really clear, I just want to help them but in the end it’s them that do the job."
