Manchester United confirm double injury scare after Rangers win

Man Utd scored late on to defeat Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Ruben Amorim has confirmed defensive duo Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro both suffered injury scares in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Rangers on Thursday night.

De Ligt thought he gave United the lead when he headed in from a first-half corner, only for the goal to be harshly ruled out after a VAR check. The Dutchman impressed in the heart of the United defence but was replaced at half-time of the match by Harry Maguire.

Yoro only lasted another 10 minutes after the restart before he was replaced by fellow defender Tyrell Malacia in what was another injury scare to the United head coach. United are back in action when they travel to face Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday night and it is unclear whether they will be fit.

Speaking after the Rangers win, Amorim confirmed the latest injury scare for his side: "He (De Ligt) felt something in his leg. Also, Leny [Yoro] so we cannot risk anything," the head coach told TNT Sports. "We have to win but we have to protect the players and show that everyone matters in this moment. We started the game scoring first, that is important. You can see that in Europe, it is quite different. We scored the first one and in the Premier League, it is not a foul."

United required a late winner from captain Bruno Fernandes to rescue their win over Rangers and Amorim felt his side deserved their dramatic victory. He added: "We did well. We played better with the ball. I think we started well and then we lost control of the game because of some bad decisions but the lads did well. We are so near the second goal with so many chances, it's so hard but they recover. We are not playing our best but we regrouped from the last game. I know the opponent is different. It wasn't as fast. You can see the connections. I think we need to be more clinical in the right moments because that can help us a lot."
