'He's a top, top player' - Ruben Amorim hails Manchester United star who 'feels at home' after Lyon draw

Man Utd were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Ruben Amorim piled the praise on Leny Yoro after his performance for Manchester United in their 2-2 draw with Lyon on Thursday night. The 19-year-old scored his first goal for the club in what was an impressive individual display during their Europa League quarter-final first leg.

Yoro scored an excellent improvised header on the stroke of half-time to draw United level after a howler from Andre Onana had gifted the home side the lead. Joshua Zirkzee looked to have won the match in the final minutes when he headed in from a Bruno Fernandes cross, only for Lyon to equalise right at the death when Rayan Cherki capitalised on another error from Onana.

United were harshly punished after an impressive comeback performance, but the display from Yoro was an overriding positive for Amorim, even if they failed to hold onto a first-leg victory.

Leny Yoro not only scored his first Manchester United goal in their 2-2 with Lyon on Thursday night, but he also caught the eye with his overall performance in the match. The 19-year-old won every tackle he attempted, had a passing accuracy of 93 percent, made one interception, one block, and sent three efforts at the Lyon goal.

Speaking after the match, United head coach Ruben Amorim provided a glowing review of the teenager's latest display and hinted at the key role he could play in the years ahead. "He's really good,” he said in his post-match press conference. “He's really confident. He's improving his physicality. We are seeing all the work that all the staff are doing with him. He feels at home in our club. He's a top, top, top player."

Amorim will also be delighted with Yoro's own reaction to the draw after the defender played down the importance of his goal on a night where United failed to win.

“I didn’t enjoy too much - no celebration because it’s normal, we want to win," he told TNT Sports. "No time for celebration. Really happy to score my first goal. We don’t have the win but it’s okay. Honestly it was really quick, I don’t even think about anything, I just put my head, try to score.”

When further pushed on their performance and what positives they could take into the second leg against Lyon next week, he added: “I think to be together like that, defend really well. I think we did really well. It was compact, we tried to block every counter attack, things like that we need to keep it and to give everything at Old Trafford. I think if we won 2-1 we would be more confident [to make it through] for sure we concede this goal, it's difficult but we need to keep our heads up. We didn't lose, we can win at Old Trafford.”
