Man Utd player ratings from the 2-2 draw with Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final first leg.

Leny Yoro shone but Andre Onana struggled as Manchester United were held to a 2-2 draw by Lyon in the first leg of their crucial Europa League quarter-final tie. Ruben Amorim named an unchanged starting line up from the Manchester derby draw against Man City, as Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund retained their roles in attack.

United had started the match well, but it soon counted for nothing when Andre Onana produced a huge goalkeeping error to allow a Thiago Almada free-kick in at the back post. The goal lifted the home side, but United found themselves level on the stroke of half-time when Leny Yoro headed in from close range after a scuffed volley from Manuel Ugarte.

After the break, Alexandre Lacazette sliced wide from close range while Corentin Tolisso sent a tame effort straight at Onana, while Garnacho ruined a superb United counter-attack with an overhit pass that ended it. Lacazette wasted another good chance to score for Lyon and was made to pay when Joshua Zirkzee latched onto a superb pass from Bruno Fernandes to secure a late goal. It looked to have won the match for United, but they paid the price when Rayan Cherki capitalised on another error from Onana to equalise in the final seconds.

Here is how we rated the United players in what was an encouraging first leg performance:

Andre Onana

An unacceptable error that ultimately cost his side their control of the game early on. An embarrassing response to his bullish pre-match comments and another error right at the death. 3

Noussair Mazraoui

He defended admirably throughout and produced a fine recovery challenge to ensure his side didn’t go two goals down. He has become one of Amorim’s most reliable players. 7

Harry Maguire

A few shaky moments at the back and not up to the usual standard we have seen from him in recent weeks. He was done no favours by the goalkeeper behind him. 5

Leny Yoro

The perfect time to score his first goal for the club. He was good in both boxes and made a vital contribution to the result. A star in the making. 8

Diogo Dalot

Another encouraging performance as a right wing-back. He linked up well with Garnacho but was caught out a couple of times. 6

Casemiro

He posed an attacking threat, but he left too much space in the midfield. Not as good as he had been in recent matches but he almost scored a late header. 6

Manuel Ugarte

Exactly what you’d expect from him. He covered ground and broke up play, but was poor in possession. An unlikely assist for Yoro and he was booked in the second half. 5

Patrick Dorgu

An improvement from the weekend. He should have had an assist for Rasmus Hojlund when he cut the ball back across goal. It is clear to see why Amorim signed him. 7

Alejandro Garnacho

He worked hard in the forward line but didn’t offer enough of an attacking threat. Garnacho is fortunate to start as often as he does. 5

Bruno Fernandes

The main attacking threat for United once again. He saw a good effort blocked and played a key role in both of the goals. Some good defensive work in the final stages. 8

Rasmus Hojlund

A performance as costly as Onana’s. He is short of confidence and just not good enough to lead the line for United on current form. 4

Joshua Zirkzee

The hero for United from the bench. A well-taken goal to secure an incredible away win. He had impressed before that with his hold-up play. 8

Mason Mount

Another positive impact from the bench. He kept the ball well and frustrated the Lyon players and crowd. Injected a bit of fight into the United side. 7

Victor Lindelof

He looked comfortable in the central defensive role after he replaced Harry Maguire from the bench. Lucky not to be punished when Lacazette blasted over the bar. 6

Kobbie Mainoo

It was fantastic to see Mainoo back on the pitch after two months out. He has to earn a place back in the starting line up now. 5
