Europa League semi-final draw: Who Man Utd will face if they beat Lyon

Manchester United will hope to take another step towards the Europa League final tonight when they make the trip to France to take on Lyon.

The Red Devils are almost certain to record their lowest ever Premier League finish and points tally after a calamitous campaign but still have one last chance to salvage their season with Champions League qualification if they can go all the way to the final and win the Europa League for the first time since 2017.

Jose Mourinho was the last United manager to taste success on the European stage, and Ruben Amorim a two-time Portuguese title winner has a golden opportunity to try and follow suit and endear himself to the Old Trafford faithful.

The game is likely to be played with plenty of needle based on the pre-match comments with Nemanja Matic branding Andre Onana as one of the ‘worst goalkeepers in United’s history’ after the Cameroonian referred to his side as a ‘much better team with Lyon.”

Following the scathing verdict from Onana in the late update in the war of words, he said: "I would never be disrespectful to another club. We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent. We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud. At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same."

Who could Man Utd face in the Europa League semi-final?

United will need to be a their best to progress against a Lyon side sitting fifth in the Ligue 1 table, but who is next on the horizon if the Red Devils do manage to book their place in the last four?

With the draws for both the quarter-finals and the semi-finals being made at the same time of the round-of-16 draw back in February, United have long been aware of their potential road to the Europa League final. The Red Devils dispatched of Real Sociedad to reach the quarter-final and have been paired with Lyon as a result of their triumph over FCSB, winning 7-1 on aggregate.

This means that if United are to progress against Lyon they will face the winner of the game between Athletic Bilbao and Rangers. Athletic Club knocked Serie A side AS Roma out in the last round while Rangers advanced on penalties against Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce after a 3-3 draw on aggregate.

When and where is the Europa League final 2025?

The 2025 Europa League final will take place on Wednesday, May 21. It is being held at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Spain - home of Athletic Bilbao. Kick-off is currently scheduled for 8pm.

Bilbao will be hopeful of going all the way to the final at their home stadium, with Rangers being the latest team standing in their way. They have never previously won the Europa League but did finish runners-up on two occasions. One of those was in 2012 when they beat United on their way to the final but lost to Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid. Meanwhile, Rangers also hold a similar record after losing out in the final in 2008 and 2022.

Elsewhere, Lazio are also chasing their first ever Europa League triumph as they take on a Bodo/Glimt side that have progressed to the last eight for the first time in their history.

Spurs, who are chasing their first piece of silverware since 2008, have won the competition twice in their history with the most recent coming in 1983. They take on 2022 winners Frankfurt in the quarter-final stage.
