Erik ten Hag made the bold decision to drop his captain on Monday when United defeated Liverpool at home - a decision that paid off.

New signing Lisandro Martinez had been heavily criticised for his performance in his first two outings, but he was given the nod ahead of Maguire.

For Saturday’s lunchtime clash with Southampton, Martinez and Varane were given the nod again, and Maguire was again left on the bench.

The absence of the England star is already making headlines, especially given he is the club’s captain, signig for £80million in 2019.

But Red Devils legend Ferdinand believes Maguire now faces a tough battle to get back in to United’s back line.

“I think the big thing in the game the other day was Varane, who has that experience,” said Ferdinand when discussing Martinez.

“He needs someone to cover in behind him when he is tenacious and going in. I think that partnership is going to be key in the success of this team, it’s the foundation.

“And it’s not about who we think is the best player, it’s the best partnership.

“They have come in, they have the shirts, and it’s going to be a tussle for Harry Maguire to try to get back in there.”

Maguire has been linked with a surprise exit over recent weeks, but there doesn’t appear to be any real truth in those rumours.

It is likely the England international will have to battle for his place, and he should get opportunities given the length of the season and the fact United are involved in multiple competitions.

Though, it will be concerning Maguire more given this is a World Cup year, and he has his England starting spot to think about.
