Mason Greenwood was sent off for the first time in his career on Tuesday night, in Getafe’s 2-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano.

In an ill-tempered match, the on-loan Manchester United forward was shown a straight red card in the 50th minute for a allegedly shouting ‘f**k you’ at referee Jorge Figueroa Vazquez. Greenwood was one of three players to receive red cards in the game, along with Juanmi Latasa and Damian Suarez.

However, Getafe manager Jose Bordalas claimed after the match that Greenwood’s expletive was not directed at the referee. “The player has told me that he said ‘f*** sake’ and did not insult anyone,” the 59-year said.

Greenwood is on a year-long loan at the Spanish side and has scored five goals in 16 appearances this season and has put in several impressive displays. France star Antoine Griezmann claimed last month that Atletico Madrid ‘couldn’t stop’ the 22-year-old, during a 3-3 draw at the Metropolitano Stadium, while Greenwood has also been linked with a switch to Barcelona.

The striker is not expected to represent United again following an internal investigation after criminal charges were dropped against the player last year. Greenwood has always denied allegations of attempted rape, assault, and coercive control that were made against him.

United initially planned to bring the academy product back into the first-team fold, but a public backlash against the decision saw United change those plans and Greenwood joined Getafe on transfer deadline day. The side from the Madrid suburbs currently sit eight in La Liga and are six points off the European places.
