Mason Greenwood has joined Getafe on loan, the Spanish club have confirmed.

The forward was linked with moves to Italy, Greece and Turkey on transfer deadline day, but completed a temporary move to Getafe just minutes before the 11pm window closed. The deal will be a relief for Manchester United, who wanted to move Greenwood on before the end of the summer transfer market.

In a statement via their website, Getafe said: "Getafe Football Club has reached an agreement with Manchester United for the arrival of Mason Greenwood on loan for one season.

"Born in Bradford (England), he has been part of the youth ranks of the Red Devils since he was seven years old. The player has played more than 80 games in the Premier League, where he has been able to score a total of 22 goals. In addition, he has played 10 games in the Champions League with a total of 2 goals scored. On September 5, 2020 he made his debut for the England senior team."

Greenwood has not played a competitive game of football since January 2022, the same month he was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. Greenwood was later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault, before the charges were dropped in February 2023.

The 21-year-old, who has always denied the charges against him, was the subject of an internal investigation that concluded his career should continue away from Old Trafford, despite the club stating they were confident he had not committed the allegations made against him.

United said via their website: "The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United. The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition."

Getafe finished 15th last season in La Liga and have picked up four points from their opening three matches of the season.
