'Didn't deserve it' - Mason Mount makes honest admission after first Manchester United goal

Man Utd were fortunate to even grab a point away against Brentford on Saturday night.

Mason Mount admits that Manchester United wouldn't have deserved to beat Brentford had his first goal for the club turned out to be a winner on Saturday night.

United were clearly second best throughout the entirety of the match but looked to have secured an unlikely win when substitute Mount finished coolly in the sixth minute of added time, only for Brentford defender Kristoffer Ajer to level the scores three minutes later.

Brentford, who have been scrapping for their lives all season, finished the match with a staggering 31 shots in total, compared to just 11 for United. They could easily have won the match if not for a fine double save from Andre Onana and some poor finishing of their own throughout the contest.

United's dropped points are a huge blow to their hopes of Champions League qualification after Aston Villa and Tottenham had both recorded victories earlier in the day.

Speaking after the match, Mount admitted an improvement was obviously needed from his side but insisted that they would get better in the weeks ahead.

"When you go 1-0 up right at the end you want to try and hang onto that," he told Sky Sports after the draw. "If you look at the game overall it wasn't to our standard. We know that. When you score at the death you think you can maybe hang on. But maybe we didn't deserve it.

"Brentford make it difficult. It is never easy coming here. They make it tough and get around you. Maybe we didn't get it going from the beginning.

"We know we can improve and we need to because we need to win games. We will improve, we will work hard. These are the games you want to win. We need to step up and that is what we will focus on."
